When is it appropriate to have a child evaluated?

An evaluation is recommended when a child shows signs of struggling with tasks that are considered age appropriate in any of the key domains of a child’s life. These include school, self-care, peer or family relationships, and self-concept/self-esteem.

How is an evaluation useful?

Evaluations help to identify the cause of a child’s difficulties, allowing the development of an individualized plan of intervention designed to help improve the child’s functioning in any of the key domains.

At what age can a child be evaluated?

As soon as it becomes evident that a child is either not meeting developmental expectations or there has been no successful resolution of a problem despite efforts of the parents and/or schools. We see children beginning at the age of 3 years and can make referrals for younger children.

We work to provide an accurate diagnosis using a multi-method assessment approach with input from the child, parents, physician, and teachers.

After the evaluation is complete, we meet with parents to discuss evaluation findings and make recommendations regarding appropriate and effective interventions. We provide a detailed evaluation report to the parents and the physician who requested the evaluation.

If needed, we will talk with the child’s teachers, school counselors, and/or school administrators to convey test results and discuss recommended academic modifications and/or accommodations.
